Inside Our Wheel Shop: ISO 9001 Wheels, End to End

Why ISO 9001‑Certified Wheels Matter in Harsh UK Conditions

UK agriculture, construction and industry are unforgiving: heavy axle loads, slurry and fertiliser attack, quarry dust, tight yard turns and sustained road speeds expose weaknesses fast. That is why we build under an ISO 9001 quality management system. Defined processes, in‑process checks and records deliver consistent, safe wheels every time.

Fieldens OTR Ltd has over 60 years of wheel and tyre expertise. This walk‑through covers our end‑to‑end approach — steel in, certified wheel out — from specification and forming to weld QA, NDT, run‑out and paint, then tyre fitting and delivery. Explore our wheel manufacturing capability.

Material Specification and Traceable Procurement

We source certified plate steels for rims and centres, chosen for yield strength, tensile strength and toughness. The goal is predictable forming, reliable welds and long fatigue life in the field. Every delivery arrives with mill test certificates (MTCs); heat numbers and batches are recorded at goods‑in and linked to the job.

Rim profiles are matched to tyre technology. Correct bead seats, well design and width support modern IF/VF tyres at lower pressures. See our guide to rim profiles for IF/VF tyres. Where possible we buy UK/European steel. Traceability follows each component from receipt to the finished, painted wheel.

Cutting, Forming and Rim Rolling to Tolerance

Rim strip and centres are CNC cut for accuracy, and edges are prepped for clean, sound welds. Rim strip is cold‑rolled for true roundness; the flash is removed and joints are dressed for tight, repeatable fit‑up.

In‑process checks verify width, diameter and pre‑weld run‑out. Jigs, mandrels and gauges lock in geometry so welding begins from a controlled baseline. This minimises distortion, improves balance and protects tyre life.

Callipers measure new tyre tread.

Centres, Dishes and Hub Interfaces Engineered Correctly

We engineer offset, PCD, centre bore and dish geometry to suit the hub and duty. Stud‑piloted and hub‑piloted systems require different clearances and contact faces. Clamp load integrity is verified so joints stay tight through field work and at road speed.

Load cases are checked for static load, dynamic factors and side loads on telehandlers and loaders. Safety factors reflect duty and environment, guarding against fatigue and fretting over long service.

Qualified Weld Procedures and Clean Joints

Fatigue life starts with joint design. We specify bevels, lands, gaps and cleanliness so welds fuse fully without inclusions. Surfaces are decontaminated and protected between operations to prevent porosity.

Welding follows qualified WPS with supporting PQRs and certified welders (WPQ). Heat input and interpass temperatures are controlled, and tack/weld sequences manage distortion. The result is consistent, compliant welds that keep geometry within specification.

NDT, Dimensional Control and Run‑Out Management

Critical welds and features are inspected using magnetic particle (MPI) or dye penetrant (DPI) methods as required. We run 100% checks on key dimensions including PCD, centre bore, offset and width.

Face and radial run‑out are measured with dial indicators against tight targets. If needed, we correct and recheck before release. For higher‑speed roadwork we can also balance assemblies. Good concentricity protects tyre wear and driver comfort. Read more on row‑crop wheel tolerances, PCD and offset.

Surface Prep and Paint for Long Service Life

Wheels are shot‑blasted to a consistent profile, degreased and carefully masked to protect bead seats and interfaces. We typically apply a zinc‑rich primer with a hard‑wearing epoxy or polyurethane topcoat to resist fertilisers, road salt and abrasion.

OEM colour matching is available. Coatings are checked for film build and cure. The finish is specified to last in real UK weather and yard conditions.

ISO 9001 Documentation and Full Traceability

Each job follows a routed traveller with hold points, first‑off inspections and sign‑offs. Serial numbers and date codes are applied to the wheel. We can trace material heats, operators, weld procedures, NDT results and paint batches years later for audit or in‑field support.

If you need measurement help before build, see our guide to measuring bespoke agricultural wheels to ISO 9001. Documentation underpins safety and simplifies future replacements.

Tyre Selection, Mounting and Polycoat Tyrefill

We supply and fit tyres from leading brands including Michelin, BKT and ATG. Selection is based on duty, load/speed and terrain. Correct rim match and bead seating protect IF/VF performance and spread load at lower pressures.

For puncture‑prone sites we offer Polycoat Tyrefill. It replaces air with a resilient polyurethane, eliminating flats and keeping machines productive. We size fill density to balance heat, load and ride for telehandlers, waste and industrial plant.

Final QC, Packing and UK Delivery & Fitting

Before despatch we complete visual and dimensional checks, confirm markings and compile the QA pack. Torque specifications accompany the wheel set or are applied during fitting with calibrated tools.

Wheels are protected with edge guards, spacers and wrap to preserve the finish. Our teams provide UK delivery and on‑site fitting. For details see delivery and fitting.

Built for the Field: Applications and Case Snapshots

Flotation trailers: Wide rims and IF/VF tyres reduce ground pressure on wet soils, protecting structure and cutting rutting. Customers report wider working windows and less remediation.

High‑HP tractor duals: Matched dual sets deliver traction without over‑inflation, keeping road manners acceptable. Correct offsets, clamps and run‑out control are critical to stability and tyre life.

Telehandlers in waste: Polycoat‑filled tyres run puncture‑free through debris, removing unplanned stops. The right compound and fill density manage heat and load for long service.

How to Specify Your Bespoke Wheel and Tyre Package

Gather hub and duty data so we can quote precisely. Measure PCD, centre bore, stud size, nut type, dish and required offset/track width. Confirm static and dynamic loads, duty cycle and maximum transport speed.

  • PCD, centre bore and hub type (stud‑ or hub‑piloted)
  • Dish, required offset and track width
  • Axle loads, speed rating and roadwork share
  • Tyre size, IF/VF requirement and terrain

We ensure correct load/speed ratings for UK road compliance and safety. Speak to our engineers for a tailored build from Fieldens OTR Ltd. Start your enquiry via our contact page.

FAQs

Do you build wheels for IF/VF tyres?

Yes. We match rim width and profile to the tyre and control run‑out to protect low‑pressure performance. We also advise on inflation for load and speed.

Can you fit tyres and balance the assembly?

Yes. We supply, mount and seat tyres, and balance assemblies where the application demands it (e.g. higher road speeds). Torque guidance is supplied with every set.

When should I choose Polycoat Tyrefill?

Use Tyrefill where punctures cause downtime, such as waste, recycling and demolition. We select fill density to suit load, heat and ride.

What traceability do I get with my wheel?

Each wheel is serialised. We record material heats, weld procedures, operators, NDT findings and paint batches. Records are retained for future support.

How do you control wheel run‑out?

We set rims true before welding, control heat input and verify run‑out on indicators. If needed, we correct and recheck to meet specification.

Do you offer UK on‑site fitting?

Yes. Fieldens OTR Ltd delivers, fits on site and torques to specification. We also provide re‑torque guidance after the first 10–20 hours of operation.
