How To Read Your Tyre Size
To pick the right tyre for your tractor, you need to know the right size. You can find the size written on the side of the tyre, and it can be shown in different ways. Here’s a simple explanation:
Imperial Tyre Sizes (like “12.4 – 28”): This is measured in inches. The first number (12.4″) tells you how wide the tyre is. The “-” means the tyre is made with a certain type of construction. The last number (28″) is the size of the wheel it fits on.
Metric Tyre Sizes (like “340 / 85 R 24”): This is measured a bit differently. The first number (340mm) is the width. The second number is the tyre’s side height compared to its width, here it’s 85%, meaning the side is 85% as tall as the tyre is wide. The “R” means the tyre is built in a specific way, and the last number is the wheel size in inches, just like before.
Load/Speed And Ply Ratings
You also need to look at how much weight the tyre can carry, how fast it can go, and how strong it is. These details are called the load/speed and ply ratings and you’ll find them on the side of the tyre. Here’s what they mean in simple terms:
Load Index: This number tells you the maximum weight the tyre can handle safely. Tractors work hard, so using a tyre with the right load index is crucial. If you don’t, you might end up with a tyre that wears out too soon or fails, causing downtime and extra costs. The load index isn’t the actual weight but a number that stands for a certain weight limit, ranging from 45kg to 6000kg.
Speed Rating: This indicates the top speed your tyre can safely reach. Matching the right speed rating with your work ensures your tractor runs smoothly and safely. The ratings range from A1 for very slow speeds (like 3mph) up to F for faster speeds (50mph).
Ply Ratings: This is used to show how many layers of rubber were in the tyre (for example, “10ply” meant 10 layers). But with new tech and materials, this isn’t just about layers anymore. It’s about the tyre’s strength as if it had a certain number of rubber layers. It’s still a helpful way to understand how tough the tyre is.
When picking tyres, ensure these ratings match what you need for your work. It’ll save you time and money in the long run.If you’re unsure which tyre you’ll need, our team will be happy to help.
Radial vs. Crossply Tractor Tyres
Radial tyres have a modern design where the sidewall and the tread function independently. This structure provides flexibility and strength, allowing for better shock absorption and a smoother ride that can extend working hours. Radial tyres also improve vehicle stability, maintain continuous ground contact, reduce soil compaction, and offer longer tread life. They are particularly effective for faster vehicles due to their superior heat dissipation capabilities.
On the other hand, Crossply tyres are preferred for specific situations. These tyres have stiffer sidewalls, making them more resistant to punctures—a significant advantage in environments like forestry. They also provide less suspension, which is beneficial for machinery such as forklifts and scissor lifts where stability with heavy loads is crucial.
